About the program
With “Les Montaigues et les Capulets,” Sergei Prokofiev brings one of the most famous parts of his ballet Romeo and Juliet to life. The menacing march and powerful rhythms depict the centuries-old enmity between the Montaigue and Capulet families. Prokofiev (1891–1953) was known for his innovative style, in which sharp contrasts, unexpected harmonies, and compelling melodies come together.
In the “Variations on a Rococo Theme,” Tchaikovsky returns to the elegance and refinement of the eighteenth century. The work, written for cello and orchestra, consists of a series of virtuosic variations on an original theme inspired by the music of Mozart. We will play this piece together with the cellist. Emma Naegele.
Rachmaninov's Second Symphony is one of the highlights of the late Romantic repertoire. After his First Symphony received devastating reviews at its premiere, the composer struggled for years with insecurity and a creative block. However, with his Second Symphony, Rachmaninov (1873–1943) proved his great compositional talent. The work is characterized by lush orchestral sounds, broad melodic lines, and an intense emotional charge that continues to move audiences to this day.
